As you are aware, Leander ISD canceled school on three days this winter due to the unusual inclement weather we experienced in Central Texas. On Thursday, February 20, the LISD Board of Trustees voted to revise the 2013-14 district calendar to maximize learning time and account for the weather-related closings.
Parents should make a note of these important dates:
Wednesday, February 26, originally designated as an early release day, will now be a full day of instruction. If this change to the calendar presents conflicts with previously scheduled appointments for your student, please contact your child's school.
Monday, April 28, will be used as one of the district’s bad weather make-up days. Students will have a full day of instruction on that day. The second bad weather make-up day is now planned for a day students were already scheduled to attend school. See below for a detailed explanation about the bad weather make-up days.
Monday, May 26 (Memorial Day) will now be a staff and student holiday. The day will no longer be a bad weather make-up day.
Further Information about Bad Weather Make-Up Days
By law, school districts are required to have two bad weather make-up days on their school calendars. Originally, the two bad weather make-up days listed on the 2013-14 LISD school calendar were Monday, April 28 and Monday, May 26 (Memorial Day). Based on community feedback, LISD administration consulted with the Texas Education Agency and researched legal options that would allow the district to alter the current calendar and account for the two bad weather make-up days without using May 26 as a bad weather make-up day. At the Thursday, February 20 meeting, the LISD Board of Trustees voted to designate March 3 as a bad weather make-up day. Because Monday, March 3 was already designated as a regular day of instruction on the originally published 2013-14 calendar, this is a technical change, and students will attend school on March 3 as was originally scheduled. March 3 and April 28 are now the designated bad weather make-up days that must be used due to the weather-related closings that occurred earlier this year. The Texas Education Agency has indicated that they will waive the third and/or any subsequent inclement weather days used.
The LISD Board approved changing Wednesday, Feb. 26 to a full day of learning. It will no longer be an early release day for LISD students.

Leander ISD tries to maintain an open student transfer option for its parents, but must close campuses (or specific grades at open campuses) to inbound transfers when campus/grade level enrollment approaches capacity. We work to be sure that no safety issues arise from overcrowded conditions. Enrollments and transfer requests are monitored daily throughout the year. Transfer requests can be submitted on-line beginning Friday, February 28, 2014. Please be sure that you submit your transfer request(s) promptly, as the transfer request deadline is April 4, 2014 (except for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten transfer requests will be accepted April 16 – April 28), and the district will not consider any transfer requests submitted after that date until approximately two weeks prior to the start of school.
Student Transfer Request Website
Please note that some campuses will not be accepting any new
transfers due to their being at or over projected capacity. Existing
transfer students at all campuses who submit an application will be considered for approval after the April 4, 2014, deadline date.
Also remember that a non-refundable
$30.00 processing fee was implemented beginning September 1, 2011 for any student requesting a transfer, and this fee does not guarantee approval to the requested campus. Again, the student transfer submission window opens on February 28, 2014.
If you do not have access to a computer, please feel free to stop by the campus and use one of the campus computers, or should you need assistance with the transfer application, schedule a meeting with the registrar at the campus you would like your student to attend, so that they may assist you in completing this application.
If you have specific questions, you may contact the registrar on your campus or email email@example.com
Originally, February 26 was designated as an early release day on the LISD 2013-14 calendar. However, LISD administration will be recommending to the Board next week that this day be converted to a full day of instruction instead of a half day.
We know that learning happens when students are in class and unfortunately with the unusual weather our area has experienced recently, we've lost some instructional hours. We believe it is in our students’ best interest to spend that afternoon learning. If this change to the calendar presents conflicts with previously scheduled appointments for your student, please contact your child's school.
Leander ISD is proud to announce Celeste Hoang as the 2014 National Geographic Geography Bee District Champion! Hoang is a 6th grade student at Henry Middle School. Zachary Toot, an 8th grade student at Leander Middle School, was runner-up. Congratulations to these students!
February 11, 2014 – Leander ISD Superintendent Bret Champion announced that Mr. Tol Wilhite will be stepping into the role of principal at Deer Creek Elementary.
“I am very pleased to welcome Mr. Wilhite as principal of Deer Creek Elementary,” says Champion. “Throughout his professional career, Mr. Wilhite has demonstrated a strong commitment to learning and excellence in leadership with a servant’s heart. I know that Mr. Wilhite will continue to work with parents, teachers and staff to guide Deer Creek Elementary on a path of continued success.”
Wilhite has been a member of the LISD family since 2005 and has taught third grade at Knowles and third and fourth grade at Cox Elementary. Since 2010, Wilhite has served as assistant principal at Grandview Hills Elementary.
Wilhite earned a bachelor’s degree from Mary-Hardin Baylor University in Belton, Texas, and his master’s degree in education at LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas.
Wilhite replaces Vicki Price as principal at Deer Creek who retired December.
LISD just completed the final conference call regarding the weather. Officials are expecting the winter advisory to be lifted at 6 PM tonight and do not anticipate further weather issues for tomorrow. We should have a normal school day! Thanks for your patience and your feedback. We appreciate your support!
Outdoor events within Leander ISD have been canceled for today. Athletic events requiring travel outside of Leander ISD have also been canceled.
The Vista Ridge High School NJROTC Air Rifle Team finished in third place at the Navy State Championship on February 1 at Joshua High School. Way to go!

LISD has been monitoring the weather and road conditions since 3:45 AM and also participated in all conference calls with county and weather officials. Forecasters have indicated that most of the district remained below freezing temperatures throughout the night which increases chances of any precipitation that may fall to create potential hazardous road conditions.
So, out of an abundance of caution, LISD will delay all classes and offices opening for 2 hours today, Tuesday, Feb. 11. Buses will run their normal routes, only 2 hours later. No morning Pre-K and no morning breakfast will be served.
We will continue to monitor and will inform you of any other changes to the schedule. Stay warm and please be safe!
Note: Any OFFICIAL communication will only be distributed via the normal Leander ISD communications methods (Insider emails, phone calls, text messages, district and campus websites, original posts on Leander ISD Facebook and Twitter). Please beware of copies or imitations.
Monday, Feb. 10, 10 PM: We have just finished both of the scheduled inclement weather calls with our counties' emergency management consortiums and received an update of the current weather forecast. At this point, there are still too many variables to predict if we will be impacted by any possible hazardous weather conditions. We will follow our protocol and have staff driving our routes in the early morning hours to verify road conditions. The next weather calls are scheduled for 4 a.m., at which time we will assess current conditions before making a decision on any possible changes to the schedule.
Monday, Feb. 10, 5 PM: Once again, Leander ISD is monitoring the weather due to the threats of potential icy conditions. Our administration and risk management teams will be on several conference calls throughout this evening and into the early morning with weather and county officials before making any decision about school delays or closings. Please know that the safety of our students and staff is our top priority.
We are being told that "an Arctic air mass will be in place overnight into Tuesday bringing a threat for light freezing rain". Also, it is important to note that ice accumulations will be highly dependent on temperatures.
Because there are several variables yet to be determined, we anticipate that the decision to delay or cancel school will be made in the early morning hours unless we receive information that indicates we can make a decision in the late evening hours. Following our protocol for weather communications, information will posted on websites and social media immediately upon the decision being made, and phone calls will go out at 6 AM. We will continue to use the same methods of communication, including district and campus websites, phone calls, emails and text messages, LISD Facebook and Twitter, as well as the local TV media.
