History of Laura Welch Bush Elementary

On February 21, 2002 the Leander ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to name the district's new elementary campus Laura Welch Bush Elementary. United States of America First Lady Laura Welch Bush, former First Lady of Texas, is a native Texan who was born and reared in Midland, where she attended public schools. A former public school librarian, Mrs. Bush has used her public role to herald the work Texas authors and artists, while also highlighting children's programs and the importance of libraries, reading, and education. She taught elementary grades and served as a librarian in public schools in Dallas, Houston, and Austin from 1968 to 1977. Her focus on reading and public education made her a logical choice for the new school, said LISD school board members. The Texas Education Agency reports that Laura Welch Bush Elementary is the first Texas school named for the U.S. First Lady.
